PILA SKI SCHOOL

Located at an altitude of 1.800 meters, the Pila Ski School offers a unique experience in the heart of the Alps. The breathtaking panorama includes some of the highest peaks in Europe, including Mont-Blanc, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Grand Combin, and Gran Paradiso, to name just a few.
Just a few minutes' drive from Aosta, the school is easily accessible thanks to the Aosta/Pila cable car. Starting from the winter season of 2025, a new section will be available that will take you to the top of Couis 1 at 2.900 meters, where you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the majestic four-thousand-meter peaks of Europe and the magnificent Gran Paradiso National Park. The cable car ride takes only 17 minutes to reach Pila and an additional 10 minutes to get to the summit of Couis 1.
Pila is well connected, located 180 km from Malpensa Airport and 120 km from Turin-Caselle Airport. Its strategic location makes it easily accessible from both France and Switzerland through the Mont Blanc and Gran San Bernardo tunnels.
Our staff consists of a close-knit team of highly qualified instructors, experienced in teaching skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and telemark. Among our teachers are former athletes and coaches of national teams, as well as certified instructors in alpine skiing, snowboarding, and telemark.
Since 2008, the school has expanded its offerings with two new locations situated at the departure and arrival points of the Aosta/Pila cable car, a private slope with a conveyor belt for beginners, two ski rental shops, a storage area for skis and boots for customers, and a sports shop where you will find the best for an unforgettable winter.
Our main facility, located directly on the slopes, has recently been renovated to ensure increasingly efficient and high-quality service for our students.

THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Pila Ski School was founded in the 1949/50 season thanks to the idea of Piero Rosset from Aosta and Mario Bechaz, the first director of the school. To complete the founding group, which consisted of four members, two military instructors, Angelo Bettega and Renato Belletti, also joined. The first location of the school was in a room in front of the "Lion Noir" hotel. The inspiration for the creation of the school came from the already established ski schools in Cervinia and Courmayeur. At that time, the demand for instructors was not very high, and activities were mainly limited to Sundays and holidays.
In Pila, there were two ski lifts operated by different companies, and the instructors quickly became a point of reference for coordinating the resort, also contributing to the grooming of the slopes, sometimes with the assistance of the military. The clientele of that period, almost exclusively on Sundays, tended to ski for two or three hours with the instructor, who mainly acted as a guide. There were no advertising promotions for the resort, and instructors had not yet established collaborative relationships with local ski clubs.
Over time, the number of instructors in Pila slowly but steadily increased. The companies managing the lifts requested a more stable presence of ski instructors at the resort, allowing a group of professionals to ensure teaching even during the week. However, since teaching skiing did not yet guarantee economic security, the "permanent” instructors were partly "salaried” by the Region, which, along with the ski lifts, offered tourists the "instructor service.” This formula, inaugurated in Pila, was soon imitated by other resorts in the Aosta Valley.
Large companies began to organize ski courses for their employees, and schools offered children the opportunity to learn to ski. The "Olivetti Recreational Sports Group" from Ivrea brought dozens of buses full of skiers to the slopes of Aosta Valley with their Sunday courses.
With the increase in demand, the profession of instructor took off, becoming more solid and organized. This is the story that has led the Pila Ski School to become a reference point in the current skiing landscape.
